Washington - Congressman Lance Gooden has introduced the "Wings for Veterans Act," a new legislation aimed at creating opportunities for military veterans to pursue careers in aviation. The bill, which has gained support from other lawmakers, instructs the Secretary of Transportation to establish a pilot program that will provide flight training to eligible veterans.

Through this initiative, veterans will have the chance to obtain the necessary certificates and ratings to become commercial pilots. The program aims to leverage the skills and discipline of America's veterans while addressing the current pilot shortage. Congressman Gooden believes that by providing veterans with flight training opportunities, the program can not only support their transition to civilian life but also contribute to the future of the nation's aviation industry.

In a statement, Congressman Gooden said, "With the 'Wings for Veterans Act,' we are recognizing the potential of our veterans and providing them with tangible support to pursue successful careers post-service." He added, "Veterans possess a unique set of skills and discipline that make them excellent candidates for aviation careers."

Representative Rob Wittman, an original cosponsor of the legislation, expressed his support for the bill, noting that it provides additional opportunities for veterans who want to pursue a career in the aviation field. He stated, "Our veterans have sacrificed so much for our country, and we owe it to them to do everything we can to assist them as they transition from military service into civilian life."

Another original cosponsor, Representative Derrick Van Orden, emphasized the importance of helping veterans transition back into civilian life. As Chairman of the Economic Opportunity Subcommittee, he sees the "Wings for Veterans Act" as a way to streamline the process for veterans to receive their pilot licenses and flight certifications. He believes that these veterans will also help address the current pilot shortage, which has been affecting airports across the country.

Under the legislation, participating flight schools will play a vital role in the program. They will be responsible for soliciting applications from veterans, ensuring that applicants meet the eligibility criteria, and enrolling selected individuals in appropriate flight training programs.

The "Wings for Veterans Act" aims to provide comprehensive support to veterans by awarding grants to ten flight schools. These grants will cover tuition, flight training fees, books, training materials, equipment, and other necessary resources for veterans to attain various aviation certificates and ratings.

By introducing this legislation, Congressman Gooden and his cosponsors are taking concrete steps to assist veterans in their transition to civilian life and address the pilot shortage in the aviation industry. The "Wings for Veterans Act" recognizes the potential of veterans and seeks to provide them with the opportunities they deserve to pursue successful careers in aviation.
