City of Tyler issued the following announcement.
Mary Katherine Baker Lust, founding member of the Tyler Trees Committee, passed away at the age of 84 on July 2, 2020 after a short illness.
The Tyler Trees Committee planted a white oak tree in her honor at Bergfeld Park on Friday, Nov. 6.
Mary Kay Lust was an instrumental and founding member of many boards and committees in Tyler including Keep Tyler Beautiful, the Tyler Trees Committee, Heart of Tyler, East Texas Symphony, Marion Wilcox, Jr. Garden Club, CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Women’s Board, Leadership Tyler, and Women in Tyler.
Mary Kay was a founding member of the Tyler Trees Committee when it formed in 1989 and championed many efforts for tree preservation ordinances that the City of Tyler has in place today. Mary Kay was also the first Chair of the Keep Tyler Beautiful Board when it was created in 1995. She helped start many beautification, waste reduction and recycling programs that are still running today, including Project Daffodil and Tyler Recycles Day.
“Mary Kay will be deeply missed by our Parks staff, board members and volunteers,” said Recreation Manager Angela Bennis. “Her legacy will be forever with us. We are so grateful for everything she did for our community.”
