City of Tyler issued the following announcement.
At the City Council meeting on Nov. 11, Council approved the donation of previous Fire Station 4, located at 309 W. Martin L. King, Jr. Blvd., to the Empowerment Community Development Corporation (ECDC). ECDC will use the location as a Texas African American Museum.
“The City is excited to share in this opportunity with the ECDC,” said City Manager Edward Broussard. “The ECDC is a great organization in our community and they will have the opportunity to tell the story of impactful African Americans from East Texas. With the donation of this building, they will be able to expand their museum space.”
Under Texas Local Government Code, Section 253.011, a City may enter into an Agreement to transfer real property to a nonprofit organization provided that the following conditions are satisfied:
- the land or interest will be used by the nonprofit organization to carry out a public purpose that primarily benefits the City;
- the donation is made under terms that effect and maintain the public purpose; and
- the title and right to possession of the land or interest revert to the City if the receiving nonprofit organization ceases to use the land or interest in carrying out the public purpose.
