CITY OF TYLER: Council approves the addition of two new police officer positions

Approved

City of Tyler issued the following announcement.

On Wednesday, Sept. 23, Tyler City Council approved the Tyler Police Department to accept a grant from Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) for $250,000.

The COPS Hiring Grant will help fund two new police officer positions for the Department over the next three years, with Tyler PD taking over full financial responsibility in 2023. These officers will be utilized to take a data-driven approach for concentrated crime in specific areas in the City of Tyler.

“These additional officers will bring the Tyler Police Department numbers to 200, which is a milestone to be celebrated,” said Chief of Police Jimmy Toler. “Additionally, these added officers will allow us to extend our efforts in data-driven and community-minded policing.”

The local Civil Service Commission met and approved Tyler Police Department’s staffing numbers on Sept. 9.
