CITY OF TYLER: Contractors Conducting pavement condition survey through next week

Construction

City of Tyler issued the following announcement.

Applied Research Associates (ARA) will be analyzing Tyler streets in a multi-functional van equipped with cameras and sensors to determine the City streets' overall condition through the end of next week.

The City of Tyler contracted ARA for a pavement condition index (PCI) survey and pavement management services for the City's streets. To complete this survey, ARA will be driving about 620 miles of the City's roads for about 10 days collecting data about pavement distress including cracks, rutting, raveling, potholes, edge drop-off, sealed cracks, lane markings and macrotexture. The multi-functional vehicle used to evaluate the streets is equipped with a crack measurement system, a road surface profiler, high definition cameras that acquire and store images every 20 feet and a GPS.

After the data is collected, the company will spend about five weeks prepping and rating the data and about two weeks uploading and calculating the PCI for each street and determining an overall PCI rating. Each street is given a score from 0 to 100, meaning a newly paved street would be rated at a 100 on the scale.

The Engineering Department will use the data and PCI scores to develop the 2021-2022 seal coat and asphalt overlay projects.

"This survey provides the City with the data and tools to focus on those streets in most need of maintenance and put together projects for bidding," said project engineer Charles Sampson. "These projects will allow for necessary maintenance to occur before the pavement fails and requires expensive replacement."

The project costs $207,300 and is funded through the Half-Cent Sales Tax Program.
