The Tyler Independent School District will receive a $4.3 million grant from the CARES Act.
Dr. Marty Crawford, superintendent of Tyler ISD, told KLTV that it was fortunate that schools were not left out of the federal assistance packages.
Crawford said they are awaiting instructions from the Texas Education Agency about how specifically the funds can be used. Crawford said they will most likely be used to create equity, ensuring that, if schools have to revert to distance learning again, all students would have the proper equipment and access. Funds could also be used to enhance traditional instruction.
Getting the school system set up to run remotely for the last three months has taken most of the district's focus. Now that the official school year has ended and graduations are occurring, Crawford said they are able to focus on planning for the fall.
They are hoping to receive specific guidance from the TEA as to what school looks like when it reopens in the fall and instructions about how to spend the CARES Act dollars.
