Canton ISD issued the following announcement on June 24.
Canton ISD Family,
We hope you and your family are enjoying the summer break. I know many of you have questions regarding the upcoming school year. At this time Canton ISD plans to follow its adopted 2020-2021 school calendar. Within the next several weeks, Canton ISD will request information from parents regarding instruction for the fall semester. We are currently working on several options to address remote learning and potential school closures during the upcoming year. Prior to the beginning of school, Canton ISD will provide parents and the public our plan to mitigate COVID-19 spread in our schools.
The Texas Education Agency also notified districts that they would receive additional PPE equipment. Canton ISD is scheduled to receive 19,576 disposable masks, 7,688 gloves, 16 thermometers, and 201 gallons of hand sanitizer. Canton ISD will increase the number of hand sanitizing stations and our cleaning practices to provide as safe a learning environment as possible. TEA released additional guidance for school districts as they prepare for the upcoming year. Changes to the public health situation may require changes to this guidance, including additional constraints.
At this time, students will not be required to wear masks during the school day. Students will be required to meet the minimum 90% attendance rule to be awarded credit and or be promoted to the next grade. Grading policies for the 2020-2021 school year will also return to their previous policies prior to the COVID outbreak.
With Governor Abbott’s closure and cancellation of classroom instruction for Texas public schools during the spring semester and the uncertainty of potential closures during the 2020-2021 school year the Canton ISD Board of Trustees adopted a resolution, strongly urging Governor Abbott, the Texas Education Agency, and the Texas Legislature to suspend the accountability ratings for the 2020-2021 school year in order for districts to focus on recovering from possible instructional gaps resulting from the school closures caused by COVID-19.
We will continue to keep our community and school family informed of changes as the summer progresses. Again, we would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer vacation! Go Eagles & Eaglettes! Sincerely, Brian NicholsSuperintendentRead more Superintendent's Message
