QUITMAN – A state district judge last month cleared a former Wood County sheriff and his then-chief deputy in connection with a November 2015 shooting.

Judge Joe Clayton of the 402nd Judicial District Court signed an order dismissing charges against William Miles Tucker and James Arthur Brown on Feb. 7.

Brown and Tucker were indicted in October 2017 and arrested in November 2017 for official oppression, a misdemeanor, and abuse of official capacity, a felony. Tucker also faced aggravated perjury and tampering with evidence charges.

The shooting arose from an incident in which two owners of a small East Texas oil field company attempted to gain access to an oil well on Brown’s property, only to get shot by Jerry Boone, the then-sheriff’s neighbor. The men were on Boone’s property.

Boone is serving concurrent prison sentences of five years and two years for second-degree aggravated assault.
