U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz has expressed deep concern following Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's second episode of freezing during a public event, sparking discussions about McConnell's health and potential successors, The Texas Tribune reported. The incident has renewed attention on the 81-year-old Republican leader's well-being and raised questions about the future leadership of the Republican conference in the Senate.
Cruz shifted the focus of concern toward President Joe Biden, highlighting the age-related criticism from the right regarding Biden's age of 80, especially in comparison to Republican figures like former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who are significantly younger. Cruz emphasized the unique demands of the presidency compared to being a senator.
Despite concerns about McConnell's health, attending physician Brian Monahan released a statement affirming his medical clearance to continue with his schedule, noting that occasional lightheadedness can follow concussion recovery. While there have been discussions about a succession plan, Sen. John Cornyn, who is interested in leadership, and other potential contenders like Sen. John Thune and Sen. John Barrasso, continue to be close in McConnell's orbit.
On Aug. 30, McConnell experienced another episode of freezing while speaking with reporters in Covington, Kentucky, which lasted for about 30 seconds, CNN reported. This incident mirrored a similar occurrence at the U.S. Capitol the previous month, raising concerns about the 81-year-old's fitness to lead the Senate Republican caucus. The freeze happened when a reporter inquired about McConnell's plans for reelection in 2026, prompting repeated questions from the reporter before McConnell chuckled briefly, paused, and remained silent. After a moment of assistance from an aide, McConnell was able to provide a whispered response and later resumed interacting with reporters, asking them to speak up for any additional questions.
