Lance Gooden, a U.S. Congressman representing Texas’ 5th district, has taken to social media to voice his concerns regarding the compensation of executives at non-governmental organizations (NGOs) involved in immigration matters. Through a series of tweets dated February 12, 2025, Gooden expressed his disapproval of the financial practices within these organizations and emphasized the need for accountability.
In one tweet, Gooden highlighted the compensation package of HIAS CEO Mark Hetfield. He stated, “HIAS, another key player in the open border NGO saga, pays CEO Mark Hetfield $336,586 in compensation, with benefits pushing his total package to $354,517.” He argued that such funds should be allocated towards supporting Border Patrol agents rather than “lining the pockets” of those he believes are undermining national sovereignty.
On the same day, Gooden also mentioned Lutheran Community Services Northwest’s CEO David Duea. He tweeted that “Lutheran Community Services Northwest’s CEO, David Duea’s, compensation isn’t far behind the other open border NGO leaders, earning $269,500.” Gooden expressed concern over taxpayer dollars being used in this manner amid rising national debt levels.
Further emphasizing his stance against these NGOs and their funding practices on February 12th as well, Gooden declared his commitment to addressing what he perceives as misuse of taxpayer funds. He wrote: “I’m leading the fight against NGOs and working nonstop to put an end to this misuse of taxpayer funds.” His message underscored a call for transparency and responsibility in handling public finances related to immigration issues.
