Caraday of Quitman emerged as Wood County’s largest nursing home in the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) show.
The facility provided 156 beds, exceeding the Wood County nursing home average by 51 beds during the same period. On average, 38.8 residents received care there throughout the quarter.
The CMS awarded Caraday of Quitman an overall rating of 3 out of 5, surpassing the Texas average for nursing homes of 2.7.
Wood Memorial Nursing and Rehabilitation held the position of second largest in the county in Q1 2026, with 115 beds, followed by Whispering Pines Nursing and Rehab with 112 beds.
Caraday of Quitman paid $39,049 in two fines and faced two total penalties as of the first quarter of 2026.
Overall, there were four for-profit nursing homes located within Wood County, Texas.
The nation’s senior population continues to increase while numbers of minors drop, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates. From 2020 to 2024, the U.S. population age 65 and older climbed by 13%, while those under 18 decreased by 1.7%. Over the last century, the country’s older adult population has grown dramatically, from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study indicates nearly half of adults in this group—around 28 million—may need long-term support and services. More than one-third are estimated to ultimately require nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
